After arriving in London later than I had planned, I only had a few hours to rest until Sonia and I began on our 1,000 mile Edinburgh journey.
There was no chickening out or turning back, Sonia and I were about to embark on an insane cross-UK road trip with this 2010 Volkswagen Golf. Stick shift, steering wheel on the right, drive on the left.
Best drive of my life. I think I prefer driving on the wrong side…!
Gas was pretty pricey (roughly US / gallon) but it was so worth every quid.
We didn’t end up making it to Edinburgh (here’s the original route, ambitious, I know), instead we went through Manchester to Liverpool, and took our sweet time in between and at dinner in Liverpool so we decided to take a nap in the car in some mountain side area in Wales (around here). Then rushed back to Brighton (to drop Sonia off at Sussex, where she’s studying) then London in the morning.
We had an interesting setup in the car as well — Sonia’s British T-Mobile UK SIM card (unlimited Internet) was in my T-Mobile (US) G1, which was tethered to my Dell M1330 laptop using PDANet, and the whole thing was plugged into the VW’s lighter using an AC/DC converter (the GPS was also plugged into the converter). It was great fun using the Internet from the road
In total, we drove about 800 miles. And although Project Edinburgh was a failure, the trip was a complete success
I’m only 21, so the only people who would let me rent a car was Europcar — best rental company ever
