Kew Gardens’ Tropical Extravaganza Get a taste of the tropics at Kew Gardens’ month-long celebration of orchids and exotic plants. Kew boasts one of the oldest and most comprehensive orchid collections in the world. The Princess of Wales Conservatory is home to hundreds of brightly coloured orchids. A hot, steamy zone features tropical varieties with showy flowers, and a cooler zone contains species from tropical mountainous regions. The Tropical Extravaganza sees hundreds more amazing orchids added throughout the conservatory. Celebrate Kew’s 250th Anniversary The new orchid displays have been designed to look like ribbons around a birthday present, to celebrate Kew’s 250th anniversary in 2009. Kew Gardens won’t let me in. I’ve tried to enter twice, and each time I was not allowed to. This was around 2001 and 2003. They wouldn’t say why. They just wouldn’t let me in. When I had left, they let other people in.
