#6 - John Mayer, Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, Kanye West, and Mixer Manny Marroquin

In the 6th episode of Pensado’s Place, Dave is joined by 5-time GRAMMY award winning mixer Manny Marroquin! In this week’s Into The Lair, Dave discusses reference mixes, why he uses them, and some of his favorite songs to use as reference mixes. Afterwards, Dave and Manny take viewer questions and discuss their approaches to mixing today’s most popular music. 3:10 Into The Lair – All about reference mixes 3:20 Ultrasone Pro 750′s. Use of headphones to negate the sound of the room. www.ultrasone.com 3:57 Referencing Technique when mixing 4:50 „Romio and Juliet by Silk E. Fyne“ – Instrumental 5:35 „Say it To My Face“ – Young Buck 6:42 Listening to Kick Drums on NS-10 is a good reference for seeing whats going on in the160-200hz regions. 7:28 Dave uses „Torn“ by Natalie Imbruglia to reference the sibilance on vocals and make sure his „S“ sounds are up to the level of that song. 8:00 „Fix“ by Blackstreet (Mixed byTeddy Rileys) for midrange and overall apparent level. Aggressive midrange. 9:38 „My All“ by Mariah Carey for judging the EQ on a vocal 10:27 „Hella Good“ by No Doubt (Mixed by Mark „Spike“ Stent) for use of compression and transient design on drums, level of the snare drum, and the way the vocal sits. 11:03 John Legend „Used To Love U“ (Mixed by Manny Marroquin) Loves the honesty in the mix. Loves referencing it to make sure that his mixes are not too much brighter than this track. 12:03 „Miss Independent“ by Ne-Yo (Mixed by Phil Tan). Likes the level of the drums

  1. @vampr71 Ripping off other peoples hard work and creative skill so your hook will sell more records is such a cop out. People relate to it immediately because they have heard it before. Those songs had too be written too. If you can write music, write it and don’t steal it and if you cant write music, then leave the job to somebody who can. Its not cool or clever. Its just laziness and its getting old.

  2. Nothing’s wrong with referencing commercial music Dave, a lot more people do it than ya think. :)
