13 year old Climbs Mt. Everest

Jordan Romero is The Boy Who Conquered Everest. But for this remarkable 13-year-old, becoming the youngest person to climb the highest peak on the planet was only one step of his ultimate goal to summit the tallest mountains on the seven continents of the world. Nick Garner of www.sportstalk4kids.com visited with Romero in his hometown Big Bear, California. His new found fame has made Romero a popular figure beyond the mountain-climbing community. His motivational speeches to school kids and adults are driven by his desire to inspire people to lead active and healthy lives. Jordan, who trains by skiing, hiking, and running cross country, first set his sights on the world’s tallest mountains when he saw a map of the famous „Seven Summits“ in the hallway of his elementary school. With his dad and step-mom, Jordan climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania when he was just ten years old. Over the next three years, Jordan would also climb Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, Mount Elbrus in Europe, Mount Aconcagua in South America, Mount McKinley in Alaska, and finally Mount Everest in Asia on May 22, 2010. Jordan plans to complete his quest in January by summiting Vinson Massif in Antarctica. Jordan’s experience, from his active childhood in the San Bernardino Mountains to his conquest of Mount Everest, are highlighted in a new book that he co-wrote with Katherine Blanc, called „The Boy Who Conquered Everest — The Jordan Romero Story.“
