From a photographic print. May be compared with the similar slide shot of the same scene. 60 0581-3 seems to have an extremely heavy load for such a small branch line. In the background, the Carpathian mountains.

Today (may 5th 2005) was the 60th time the Dutch held Liberation day .. Canadian veterans who liberated us (the city of Almelo at the 6th of april 1945) travelled to the city to be part of this event ..

5th of may, Liberation day (and 4th of may, which is memorial day, at which we think of the people who died because of WW II) always gives me a special feeling .. Remembering what happened is so important ..

Yesterday PSV had to play the semi-final of the European Champions League (soccer) versus AC Milan, on memorial day .. UEFA wouldn’t let them change the date on the game .. Looking back, it was more beautiful this way since, next to the rest of the country, the entire stadium observed the traditional 2 minutes of silence at 20:00 as well .. It must have been impressive to be part of that happening ..

As I see the few Canadian veterans standing there during Liberation Day, I can’t help thinking that every year there will be less people left to tell the stories about the war .. What happens when there are no more people alive that can tell the story .. When all that’s left is books, photos, and video .. When the embodiment of past times is lost .. When no one can actually remember what those times felt like living in ..

Will Liberation Day still be the same?
