Virtual conquest of a summit — Mount Everest in 3D

Virtual conquest of a summit -- Mount Everest in 3D

DLR researchers recreate the ‘Roof of the World’ using optical satellite data at a resolution of 50 centimetres – a collaborative venture with DigitalGlobe and 3D RealityMaps For the first time, researchers from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have depicted Mount Everest, the ‘Roof of the World’, in 3D using optical satellite data at a maximum resolution of just half a metre. These 3D images are the outcome of a collaborative venture between the DLR Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics and the companies 3D RealityMaps GmbH and DigitalGlobe. A video allows the viewer to follow the route taken by 15 mountaineers on a current expedition to the summit of the world’s highest mountain. Our 100th Video!!! Just to try something new I thought I’d talk about my trip to Mount Everest Base Camp. Hopefully, this little hodgepodge of pictures, gear overview and travel advice will help motivate you to to get out there and see it for yourself. NOTICE: – Please understand that the photos in this presentation may not necessarily correspond to what I’m saying in the audio track. – This video is based on personal experiences and review of my old journal entries. If you want to attempt a similar journey I STRONGLY recommend you do your own research in preparation for your trip. NOTES: – You need a visa to stay in Nepal. These can be purchased when you arrive in Kathmandu airport. It’ll cost you -60US. Bring cash as there are no machines available. – When you arrive you’ll be assailed by a crowd of taxi drivers who want to take you to their hotel (imagine a movie star being jumped by paparazzi and you’ll get the idea). Make sure you have a reservation at a place before you arrive to avoid this hassle. Kathmandu Guest House is the most well known place and is easy to get to. – Spend a day looking at different guide companies and make sure to have a lot of questions prepared beforehand in order to make an informed decision. A two week package with airfare to/from Lukla, guide, room, board, and gear rental ran me about 0US. – Pack Light.Dress in layers. Stick to synthetics since they dry faster. – Enjoy your last shower before you head off on the trek. Clean water

  1. ICON2

  2. great work but its too fast to take it in …half the speed would still be only 3 minutes.

  3. why would someone dislike it??..strange

  4. brilliant

  5. very helpful video dude thanks!

  6. Hey there.. just wondering if you have the name of the company that you bought the package with? any recommended website under the price range you mentioned including the flight to lukla and meals, guide etc? Any website for the guide company? Is April,May a good time to go there? … would really appreciate your answer

  7. did your guide carry your sleeping bag and gear?

  8. how much money did you need to travel around the world?

  9. Hello, like your videos. Shoes? What type of shoes do you recommend and oppose? trail running shoes? Goretex shoes for warmth? Running shoes with mesh for cooling?

  10. That is a kick ass hat

  11. Nice vid! Two years in one pair of pants – well I guess it’s economical …

  12. Ah, thats what I thought.

thats a very interesting kukri. Your editing is nice and simple, no useless fancy transitions……which make it look like a 5 year old tried to edit it into an action movie.

  13. Sleeping Bag.

  14. Is that just a stuff sack? or is there something in the „Prime USA“ bag?
Or is it just there for looks and to fill up space.

  15. I’m not a fan of zipoff pants but functionally (material, quick dry, machine washable) it’s looks to be pretty good.
I never pay retail for my gear though.
Just haunt the sales racks at REI and other outlets.
You might come across new gear you’ve never heard of. That’s how I came across Prana.

  16. What do you think of the Prana Katek?

  17. Nope, not zipoffs.
just synthetic (polyester, nylon, and a little cotton) pants that I found at an REI gear sale.
They’re no longer on the website.
Just check out the mens line a Prana for something similar.

  18. Do you remember which model the pants were? Are they zip offs?

  19. Good stuff!

  20. 1. They were a pair of pants by Prana.
I think they were even women’s pants but I’m a small guy and they fit so well that I didn’t care.
And to be fair, there were a few places (e.g. Greece, Thailand, etc.) were all I did was wear boardshorts for the beach everyday.

    2. Oh Good Lord No. I stayed with the Sherpas in their homes. Once you get to base camp and above that’s no longer an option and you need a professional quality tent that costs more than my car.

    3. Kukri Review Coming Up!

  21. Every day for almost two years? Great pants! What make and model, and where can I get them?

    Did you use a tent/bivvy?

    Nice Kukri!

  22. Great video!
