Lewis Pugh’s mind-shifting Mt. Everest swim

www.ted.com After he swam the North Pole, Lewis Pugh vowed never to take another cold-water dip. Then, he heard of Mt. Everest’s Lake Imja — a body of water at an altitude of 5300 meters, entirely created by recent glacial melting — and began a journey that would teach him a radical new way to approach both swimming and think about climate change.TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. 6. @funnywhitney Sorry About that but now its 60 !

  7. Mt. Everest, Lake Imja, Lake Khumbu, Glacial Melting, Sherpas, Yaks & not a single utterance of the country which contains all the above & where you performed your little adventure. You did mention China in the north, India in the south and Bangladesh in the East but what about the country where you landed to trek up to 5,300 meters & which is right in the middle with 30M people residing in it. Outbursts of these glacial lakes can sweep this population in hrs. BTW the country is Nepal.

  8. Am I the only one watching the start thinking „wow, what an idiot“?

  9. how can 59 people not like this its so inspiring. we all can learn from this man. learn how to reach are own gaols and learn how are life can aid the plaint rather than hurt it

  10. how can 59 people not like this its so inspiring. we all can learn from this man. learn how to reach are own gaols and learn how are life can aid the plaint rather than hurt it

  11. I feel so pity for u Mr. Lewis, on the matter you talked about for 9:46 minutes but you hardly mention about the land where mount everest is , about the people who are directly affected by your so called developed countries deeds on environment, about the crew who helped you to get there, ya i am talking about Nepal , Sherpas and the guides ! get a life sir , we are living here for ages , u came swam and went , u forgot us ! u forgot humanity !

  12. @hughtub why do you call me a suicidal fool? because I am not reproducing??

  13. @hughtub This guy isn’t an alpha male–he’s an egotistical jerk. You can be sure he will have children exactly for this reason. Have two and be done with it is all I am saying.

  14. @scrubjay93 Suicidal fool. People who would raise their children responsibly should be having the MOST children, not the least. This guy should have dozens of kids, an alpha male as he is. Beware of using the term „we“ when OTHERS are the problem. If you are part of the solution, expand your existence and presence in the future, i.e. offspring.

  15. @scrubjay93 Fool. People who would raise their children responsibly should be having the MOST children, not the least. You damned suicidal fool.

  16. @Pasteldqueijo Liquid Water is actually denser than ice.

  17. It’s very simple: The best radical and tactical shift you can make is to not have children.

  18. U KNOW THEY DONT LET U SWIM IN RESEVOIRS FOR A REASON! U PUKED IN IT , ALMOST DIED.. DID U PEE IN IT TOO? 1 IN 3 PEOPLE ARE GONNA DRINK THAT WATER HAHA JOKING!!

  19. Everyone negative please shut the fuck up. Thanks :D

  20. Do human bodies not float?

  21. @Machomatscho Just have one child and that helps. Personally, I decided not to have any.

  22. @Pasteldqueijo it’s a speacial property of water. It expands between 4 deg to 0 degs. that’s why ice floats on water (lesser density) and why your ice cubes are bigger than the cups in the ice tray :P

  23. freezing expands? i thought heat expanded and cold condensed… wich is why ice is denser than water and thus floats and also the reason hot air is lighter than cold air..

on money –money and personal investment (except exemptions in slavery and forceful taxation) has guided production of EVERYTHING all foods, technologies, books, and skills (limited by old technology, wagons, face-to-face interaction, repressive culture) have been free and personal exchanges from supplier to merchant to buyer, for food or tuition.

    investment is trust
supply and demand governs cost/availability. free money is only inflation, needs real investment to the project

  25. @ijjesus p.3
i’m not agreeing with people who deny poverty and privilege has one of the hugest impacts on success, that it should be a crime and seen as a waste and failure to people without opportunity and stimulation and good parents and teachers and hope, but at a higher level: EVEN in the rich and dedicated, experts are NOT aware of why some fade and others shine. they dont realize the constraint of the system that drains out a bit of hope, or portions it out only a month at a time.

  32. how about you get a Koenigsegg Agera R then you will see 200mph in just 16secs

  33. @SniperLoyalist That’s in km/h. 350km/h is about 215[?]MPH.

  34. Take the GTO next time, please!

  35. Isen’t it weird when you live in europe and when you hear that 200 (mph) in is fast but in Europe we always heared 290, 320. and 350
