Nikon F4 with Kodak Portra 160NC negative film.

LumiPro LP-160 flashes fired with Cactus remotes.

Key flash shot into reflective umbrella high camera right. Second flash camera left fired through grid at table providing reflected fill.

Robert is a highly talented local chef and the kitchen manager at the Doha Four Seasons hotel. He is also a wonderful husband and father to his wife Ellen and new son, Noah. During this shoot Robert cooked some amazing dishes in order to allow me to see him in action. I got some great shots of the food and his cooking and yet somehow it is this simple portrait that stands out for me from the session.

strobist info for day 160

camera info: Nikon D3 | 85mm(ƒ/1.4D) | ƒ/1.4 | ISO 300 | 1/25s — Handheld

As you can also tell, I posted the actual image in B&W, and the strobist info shot in color…. I figured it would be useful to know that I screwed up the gel’s with this one (my mind was thinking cooling, but my fingers pulled out a warming gel, and I went with it). I tried some color salvaging techniques in Lightroom, but gave up and went with a black & white.

Nikon FE with Kodak Portra 160 negative film. Nikkor 15mm f3.5 AI.

This was a very magical fairy-tale sort of a scene so I thought I would bring that out a little by doing a little more to draw you in to the scene.
