Ramadan’s new moon

The Islamic Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar, which means it is based on lunar phases. Each lunar month begins at the birth of the new moon, and to observe the thin crescent moon of the beginning of Ramadan is especially important to Muslims.
This is somewhere near Asalouyeh, where we went two weeks ago trying to observe this Ramadan’s critical crescent. By critical I mean the observing conditions were not too far from known visibility threshold.
We used a giant 40X150 binocular, along with a GPS and some sky simulation softwares to pinpoint the moon, but could not see it due to excessive haze over the horizon.
-The scenery was supposed to be spectacular: we were on top of a mountain 1600 meters above the sea level, and just a few kilometers from the sea! Unfortunately the haze was covering the horizon, not allowing us to see the magnificent view of the sea from 1600 above it
