It has been another day of protests in Chile with tens of thousands of students demonstrating in the capital against their country’s education system. Chilean students are demanding fundamental reform to a highly privatised education system – tuition fees there are among the highest in the world. There were isolated incidents of vandalism. However, student leaders sought to distance themselves from the violence. The protests have been taking place for months. Al Jazeera’s Teresa Bo spoke to students from Chile’s Catholic University taking part in the protests.

  1. what im saying is that the „rich class“ will have to acept that poor people are smart also. maybe smarter. the „rich“ class will have to accept that if your stupid you sgouldnt have the privedge to take a class 5 times before passing. lol i have a cousin in Chile who told me the rich class buys there diploma. for example a rich kid would take a nursing course 10 time before passing. surly what poor kid can do this? lmao 10 times for one class? im talking class not enitre cousre

  3. @Educationrefromguy well said. sadly, but 90% of the kids potesting probably hate school and would never attend school if it was „free“. in usa education is free to a point. you have to prove to the system that you want to go to school. most in USA trying college but usually drop out. surley you can get free education if you fail you classes. however, having „free“ education for will change the chlean society a bit. and over time drastically but i mean many years

  4. The inbuilt mentality of class therefore, is transfered onto people within diferent types of education. Education is not a privillage, it’s a right. And the majority of the country’s working class have had enough with the people that are benefiting from the struggles they and their famalies are forced to make in order to pay for an education that is not always the best (what they are accesing to).

  6. In turn, this has created a deeply competive socitey amongst a country’s extreme unequal income distribution, People are desperate to out do one another with incomes and occupations because it is the HIGHER paying incomes that make it POSSIBLE for one to survive in a country where even your SHOPPING is able to be payed in installments. Thus, people are forced into believing that YOU must pay for good education. And if you can’t afford it, it’s bad fucking luck according to the corrupt system.

  7. Chilean Education is a Business <- Thats exactly what it is. Sure Chile has been and is economically thriving in comparison to other South American countries but at the cost of a HUGE inequality within the policy’s that contribute to Chile’s wealth to begin with.

What is with all the prejudice against the United States. This won’t happen in the States because students are already given aid from the government by means of scholarships and grants, exactly what the student of Chile should be receiving. Also these protests aren’t solely on reform of education, but call for a new constitution in Chile. If anything this won’t happen in the United States because their government has suited the demands of the people. You are being ignorant.

  9. @LuckyDukeSeven The OECD’s PISA survey reveals that that simply isn’t true.

  10. it was all fun & games in the beginning with the michael jackson choreography & superhero costumes but things have really taken a darker turn.

  18. Keep at it Chile! Your demands will be heard! Lots of love from Egypt

  19. government = do smallest amount of work for largest absolute amount of power, the gov’t is so corrupt, reform gov’t

  20. You don’t have the highest income gap. My country’s income gap is larger than yours’, and so is Chile’s and many other countries’ in LatAm and Africa. Though inequality has worsened in the US in the last decades, you’re hardly alone. The same’s happened in Europe. And again, when it comes to fighting for one’s interests, people are the same. Religion, TV: nothing is a permanent distractor when they see themselves as disadvantaged and unable to pursue their interests through traditional venues.

We have the largest gap between middle and upper-classes on earth. Out of the top 100 TV shows viewed in America, none are politically oriented or educational. More people know about celebrities than about the government and the state of our economy. It’s not just celebrity TV, it’s the culture of this country. The carelessness, the lack of real education, the lobbyists controlling the news and their government cronies protecting them.

  22. Sorry, but if you think people won’t fight for their interests because they’re distracted by celebrity TV, then YOU’re the stupid one. No one’d forget his own misery, his failure to get another job, his declining income, his inability to afford toys for his kids, because of TV. When pressed, everyone’s willing to take risks – from joining political groups to resorting to criminality – in order to avoid misery. That’s how we humans are, we’re guided by our interests – and that, no TV will change.

  23. corrupt government and greedy bankers dnt give a damn if you young people starve yourself to death ,all they care about is that you can pay your school fees/tutition good luck anyways.

  24. @LuckyDukeSeven What you talking about? American college kids are the best at partying! :D
