Waterlily House at Kew Gardens

This highly specialised and much-loved building at Kew Gardens was once an engineering marvel of its time – the world’s largest single span glasshouse. Travel back in time and find out more about the giant waterlily and its bespoke home built back in 1852.

Measuring over a metre across, these giant waterlilies (Victoria cruziana) at Kew Gardens are grown from a seed the size of a pea every year. They flower at night and are hand pollinated to ensure a supply of seed for the following year.
