Here Is Germany: World War 2 Propaganda Documentary Film Directed by Frank Capra (1945)
DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Here is Germany was a 1945 propaganda documentary film directed by Frank Capra. Like its companion film, Know Your Enemy: Japan, the film is a full-length exploration of why one of the two major Axis countries started World War II and what had to be done to keep them from „doing it again“. The film opens with scenes of everyday life in Germany, described by narrator Walter Huston. It shows people such as housewives, mailmen, farmers and policemen at work, and notes that these people were not so different than us, and seem like people Americans can understand. Anthony Veiller then interrupts with „Or can we?“, as the film then switches to a montage of Nazi concentration camps and piles of dead bodies. The narrator notes that this is not the only time that Germany has unleashed war on the world, stating that while its generation fought the „Nazis“, its fathers fought the „Huns“ (pejorative term for Germany during World War I), and its grand father remembers the „Prussians“. The narrator claims that its was all part of the same German lust for conquest. Going even further back 150 years, the film informs us that while America, Britain, and France were forming their democratic traditions, Germany was a group of 300 medieval feudal states, not one of them with a constitution or parliament. The film traces the rise of Prussia from Frederick the Great through Bismarck, telling the audience that the Prussian state was dominated first by …

it’s unfair to blame the entire German people. Nobody thought Hitler was so bad at the beginnning. There was many people who didn’t support Hitler. Actually very many people, but no one dared to talk about defying him because they could been killed or inprisoned. Hitler is the big bad wolf here not the German people.
@allterrainasshole „You may disapprove of the way your government does something but that doesn’t change the fact that they do it.“ – So that makes it okay then? I bet the people in Nazi Germany thought „if we protest, the government will arrest us, so let’s just ignore it and hope everything turns out okay.“ America is turning into a police state and our civil liberties are being stripped away every day. The oligarchs in power want us to feel apathetic and helpless. Google CIA „slide.“
@danjoschot not as bad as genocide
WTF ! Seriously….. the Germans weren´t the poeople, who caused the First Worldwar. They just were comrades with Austria and after they began the war Germany joined in because of our pact with austria….
And furthermore i just wanna say, that in this fucking concentration camps, germans were killed as well and today all germans hate the Nazis. The Government is still trying to forbid the party called „NPD“.
So inform yourself and don´t be so ignorant and say all germans are nazis.
Ok just so you people from other countries understand…..just because we are American or live in America does not automatically make us bad people. Not all of us agree with our governments „war-mongering“. Our government does whatever it pleases and usually without the consent of it’s people. I’m sure all of you have something you could bitch about that your government does. You may disapprove of the way your government does something but that doesn’t change the fact that they do it.
Germans are savages…..
The Third Reich was a sin against humanity and democracy. Whenever you tell people in other countries that you come from Germany you get to hear something about Hitler and the Nazis. Its a shame because it ruined everything for Germany, it overshadowes the great history of Germany and the many achievement we had. The reunification and the Worldcup 2006 had a positive effect on how people react towards Germany nowadays.
I just wish Germany whould have been able to sustaine the Republic of Weimar. The Kanzlers of the Republic were able to minimize the payments of the Treaty of Versailles and maybe they could have come to an agreement with the other Nations, with the help of the USA to overcome the Treaty as a whole. In the end the USA were the only ones that wanted Germany to recover from WWI, other than France, Poland and the UK that wanted Germany to become a state of farmers.
WWII was a result of the anger that was felt by many Germans towards the Treaty of Versailles and the Nations that forged it. Appart from that other nations treated Germany without any respect, like Poland. They got a big chunk of German soil and blocked all traderouts to East Prussia. The were provoking Germany, knowing that they were allied with the UK and France. But it backfired on them because Hitler wanted the war and was hoping for a reason.
Europe has a long history of wars against eachother and WWI being no exception from any war before, other than the scale. The Treaty of Versailles was a revenge of France for loosing their war of agression against the german states in 1872. Germany was forced to accept the notion that they were the only nation to be responsible for WWI. The German people never recovered from the blame that was put onto them. The end of the republic of Weimar was a direct result of the Treaty of Versailles.
Alot of bullshit and propaganda in this video. The first democratic state in Germany was Westphalia, which allready had a parliament in 1808 even Baden and Saxonia had parliaments. What about Napoleon, he ruled as a dictator in france and invaded all of Europe and Prussia (together with other German countries) fought together with the coalition to free Europe. In 1871 France declared war on the german states and lost the war one year later.
@groppermilk — lol
I’ve driven on the autobahn… but in a Chevy Surburban. : (
@the82spartans Oh, I know what you’re driving at. Well, I’m living in Munich and, via city expressway, my place is only 15 minutes away from the BMW HQ, which is located near the Olympic Stadium. A former schoolmate of mine works there. For the newly rich Russians and Chinese it’s now the latest rage to book a weekend trip to Germany to drive as fast as they can in BMWs, Mercedeses and Porsches, as we have no speed limit on the Autobahn – just flat out and whoopee! Gruss aus Deutschland!
@groppermilk — Excellent information and I stand corrected. Seems like similar design. BASF is like a household name. Interesting how things work out over time.
When you visit the States you’ll see plenty of German engineering on our roadways. : )
Adios, amigo.
@the82spartans Sorry. Looking at 1:12 again, I realized that it actually used to be the building of the Frankfurt-based HQ of a well-known chemical company named „IG Farben“. Several scientists employed there were awarded a Nobel Prize, but it became notorious for developing Cyclone B. Then the building became the HQ of the Allied Control Council. IG Farben was dissolved with BASF emerging from it, today the largest chemical company in the world. However, the building still exists. Best wishes!

@groppermilk — Yes, Lufttwaffe. A typo on my part. It must be the ladder then, the Air Ministry building, that is still standing. I had read a story that it was spared on purpose in order to keep the Luftwaffe leadership ‘status quo’ as they were predictable and the Allies didn’t want to have to face new stratagies.
Danke, and greetings from the USA.
@groppermilk first of all i was in a rush and had to go so i didn’t look over the paragraph for 10 minutes as you did (i have a life) secondly, go suck your English teachers dick some more.
@oversholder You’re an odd customer. Have you ever thought of improving your own English? Ever heard of punctuation rules? Talking of „shitty grammar“: It’s supposed to read „You’re probably … “ (not „your probably …“) – bad grammar, a blunder! Speaking of spelling: „… that DOSE not know …“ – DOES it now dawn on you how embarrassing you are? And: „… what the price costs …“ doesn’t sound very smart either. Your abusive language is beneath criticism anyway. Greetings from Germany!
@the82spartans Hi there. I just wanted to let you know that it reads „Luftwaffe“, i.e. with an „e“ at the end. Literally it translates into „air“ (= Luft) and „weapon“ (= Waffe). By the way, did you mean the Reichsluftfahrt- ministerium (= Reich’s Aviation Administration or Reich’s Air Ministry) by HQ Luftwaffe? If so: yes, the building is still there, today accommodating the officials of the German Federal Ministry of Finance in the eastern part reunited Berlin. Greetings from Germany!
@danjoschot Now, now be careful or we’ll go Audie Murphy on you again.
Funny every single item on the list also applies to the US, Russia, Japan, China and most other world powers. Propaganda, suckering emotional populations for thousands of years.
