London at War – David Greig 1941

David Greig was the eponymously titled supermarket chain of the Greig family of Hornsey, north London. With its headquarter’s at Atlantic Road and (later at Waterloo Road) grocery stores across Britain it was a rival to the nascent Sainsbury’s chain.
There was a deep personal rivalry between the two families because of acrimonious feelings about the Greig’s alleged betrayal of a verbal agreement regarding the purchasing of sites for development.
The first store was opened in Brixton in 1888 and by the 1960s there were more than 160 stores across the south of the country, many trading under the Keymarkets brand.
However, the company collapsed after failure to go public led to crippling death duties when several of the men in the family died in quick succession, with inheritance tax obligatory on their entirely private holdings.
David Greig was a notable philanthropist, leaving trusts for the benefit of Hornsey and the community. These have contributed to the Greig City Academy in Hornsey.
The old David Greig building in Canterbury (now Superdrug) won an award for its post-war architecture. There is an inscription on the wall, in memory of DAVID GREIG, founder and DAVID ROSS GREIG.
When Superdrug refurbished the store in the 1990s and the marble replaced, a stone-mason was employed to re-create the inscription. It can still be seen today.
There is another facility in Alcester (Warwickshire) in memory of his wife Hannah Susan. The current sports, arts and community facilities are called The Greig and are managed by the Hannah Susan Greig Memorial Company Limited.

I got this film from an ebay seller based out of Isriel. It is already way out of date, but I have a feeling it was never cold stored. It has a way of giving warmer milky tones. I like it, but only for special projects. This was all done on one of my photo walks I take. Usually right after work, on my way home, I’ll park some where and just wal;k for an hour. I miss rush hour traffic and create for a bit.
Rocks in the W’s front drive and Austin City Hall. The Petri is more subtle with it’s doubles. It seems more controled and less pronounced than the LC-A+. Hmmm
