The Call – (or known as a Karanga to Maori people) is an official welcome given by Maori women or a woman in this case. The Maori people believe that „a woman’s voice is a powerful thing…she is the giver of life. Her karanga calls us from the darkness of Te Po (the night) and takes us into Te Ao Marama (the world of light). Her energy unlocks the pulse of life. The karanga is enhanced by ‘moko’ patterns – the spiritually powerful tattoo designs shown as „vibrations of energy“ which are etched into the faces and bodies [and souls] of many Maori“ as is the mana (prestige and identity) that everyone is born with. The best opening ceremony Ive ever seen! Well done NZ!!
@MyZelda23 It is not a song but a Karanga (or Call) of which I could barely make out, „E te iwi, Ko te ihi, kei te wehi, ko te mana o nga iwi e“ which basically means:
TO THE PEOPLE GATHERED HERE,
WE HOLD THE IHI (essential force, excitement, power, charm, personal magnetism),
THE WEHI (dread, fear, something awesome),
AND THE MANA (prestige, authority, control, power, influence, status, spiritual power, charisma – mana is a supernatural force in a person) OF THIS PEOPLE AND THIS LAND.
Anyone know the name of the song as the players enter the field? That dramatic music. Please
@talkingoutyourbumow I agree with you on this one.
You know we are like the only countrie with the biggest ammount of Maoris.
If you didn’t like how we did our poening ceremony. then please keep it to yourself.
This was a wonderful ceremony.
and Just because your countrie isn’t in the finals. No need to hate on our countrie.
Thanks
STFU commentators
The Maoriness of NZ is so unique. Too bad you don’t see that with the Aborigines in Australia or even the Native Indians in USA.
why cant the commentators shut their mouths
@6sheldon you haven’t seen many haka’s then, have ya?
This was extremley beautiful , word’s don’t even describe. I am extremley proud to be Maori it shows that our country is a sacred and beautiful place filled with culture and spirit , so to all the people who are putting us down get fucked and choke on barbie
what a weird haka
@IG88Aiscool Possibly becasue Maori is the indigenous culture of NZ? Do you travel all the way to NZ to experience european culture?
I am Maori and living in Dubai, finally got around to watching the opening and there is only one word to describe it „EPIC“,very proud New Zealander: )
I was at this ceremony, looks better on TV than at the game.
