The Sky Is Falling!

Day 160 of 365 (Year Three)
A pretty wicked storm rolled in this evening. As I sit here watching the local news they are showing trees uprooted and power lines down. We apparently didn’t get hit that hard.
The wind picked up first. I got a bit excited thinking that it might give me an opportunity to get some lightning shots. I headed outside to check it out. The clouds were pretty wicked. Usually they just race across the sky, driven by the wind. These clouds were actually expanding. It looked like something you’d see in a movie. It was if the clouds above were pushing through and growing.
I grabbed my camera with plans to take a series of shots and put em together into a little movie. The rain hadn’t started yet. I got outside, set up and the rain started. It wasn’t heavy yet, so I managed to snap off a few before retreating into the house with the camera.
I grabbed an umbrella thinking I’d see if setting up my car like I did the last time it stormed was worth it. I didn’t even make it to the end of the walkway. Sure the rain had picked up, but mixed in with the downpour was hail. I don’t play outside in hail. Well, not for long at least.
Savanah had never seen hail and when I told her ice was falling from the sky she looked at me a bit skeptically. I headed outside to gather up a few pieces to show her. Once I grabbed a few I figured I’d get a shot of them, thus this picture.
While gathering the pieces of hail I didn’t have the umbrella with me. I didn’t plan on being out that long so I just didn’t grab it. The hail wasn’t that large and the few pieces I felt hit me didn’t hurt. I can, however, tell you that bending over to pick up pieces of hail with loose fitting pants on isn’t the best idea. I didn’t realize it at the time, but when I came back in and sat down I discovered that several pieces of hail had managed to find their way into the seat of my pants. I can tell you that hail is very very cold. Savanah thought my little "dance" was quite amusing.

Stac Fada is the remains of britains largest ever meteor strike Chemical analysis revealed evidence of what is known as an "ejecta blanket". This is debris which was thrown out when the huge projectile slammed into the Earth’s crust. The rocks of the area show a high level of the key element iridium, which is generally found in low concentrations in rocks native to planet Earth. Additional microscopic studies of the rock surface showed the tell-tale microscopic parallel fractures which once again indicate a meteorite strike. According to Scott Thackrey, a PhD student in Geology and Petroleum Geology at the University of Aberdeen: "The type of ejected deposit discovered in North West Scotland is only observed on planets and satellites that possess a volatile rich subsurface, for example, Venus, Mars and Earth. Due to the rare nature of these deposits, each new discovery provides revelations in terms of the atmospheric and surface processes that occur round craters just after impact." But the recent research not only suggests that there was a meteorite strike in British Isles, 1.2 billion years ago, but also that the meteorite was huge. The scientists estimate that the area of "ejecta blanket" is about 50 km across. They believe that the massive impact melted rocks and threw up a huge cloud of vapour that scattered material over a large part of the region around Ullapoo. It is suspected that the crater itself is to be found under the Minch, the waterway that separates Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Just after the impact, the crater would have been huge, but Ken Amor explains it was rapidly buried under sandstone. This which makes the crater invisible, but at the same time, it preserved the meteoritic material for millions of years. The evidence accumulated by Oxford and Aberdeen group definitely points to this being the largest meteorite strike known in the British Isles. Full article here
