The display reads:
85 MM Field Gun
D-44 1M944 USSR
This Soviet weapon dates back to World War II, and was designed as a multiple-purpose weapon for use both as divisional artillery, and as a powerful anti-tank gun. It was used on both towed and self-propelled mounts, and as a tank gun.
It has a vertical, sliding-wedge breech, and a hydro-pneumatic recoil system mounted behind a wavy shield. Armor penetration is not good by modern standards, but its rate of fire is high. It is capable of both direct and indirect fire, and fires a variety of rounds.
This weapon was donated to the U.S. Army Field Artillery and Fort Sill Museum by the 101st Airborne Division after its capture in Vietnam.
