Entry from: Warsaw, Poland Entry Title: „Poles apart“ Entry: „After the usual buffet breakfast we were on the bus at 7.30am. We had however forgotten to pay for a phone call, so today we held up the bus for 2 minutes. It was only 2 euro and our call had been answered by an answer phone!! The drive to the border was like the drive to Berlin – fast roads, sound protection for the houses at the side of the roads blocking the view etc. The Oder River on the border was very full after all the rain The border crossing was a nothing. We just drove over and stopped at the old border posts which are now Kantor or money exchanges. We found they had a very good rate — we only changed 15 euro () and got 60 zloty and a few coins. Our driver Giovanni told us that the border used to take 2-3 hours. We had talked to a couple who were on a cosmos tour into Russia. They had been held up for over 2 hours, their bags checked, the driver had to pay 250 euro for an ‘unsafe’ door (that was perfectly ok until the guards checked it). They must always receive their cut by fair means or foul. The next bus however was waved straight through. Poland is Europe’s 11th biggest country and bordered by 11 countries. It is a member of the EU but doesn’t use the Euro yet — maybe in 2012. The difference was obvious as soon as we set …
