Day 160: Today’s shot is for FGR and the theme Random Fascinations. Perhaps mine isn’t particularly random, but I’ve been fascinated by computers forever.
We had an Amstrad CPC464 when I was young, picked up second hand from somehwere with loads of games on cassette, and it was brilliant. No mouse or anything – you had to interact with the machine via a BASIC interpreter. Wonderful stuff! I learnt to program using the accompanying instruction manual and the demonstration code, and I totally fell in love with computers. I used some savings to get my own real PC at quite a tender age – second hand, no Internet, Windows 3.1 and a 486 processor at 16MHz.. I loved it. A friend’s dad installed Windows 95 and a bucketload of cracked games for us and that was it… I fell in love with PC gaming too.
When my parents game home, some years later, with a brand new Windows 98 Pentium 3 machine I was over the moon. The things it could do where amazing! Soon enough we got Internet – initially on dialup pay as you go, 1p/min, and evenutally in the form of all-you-can-surf £15/month dialup. When I saw an offer to get broadband, always on at 128kpbs for only £18/month, I couldn’t resist offering to pay the difference and get the upgrade. We got it, and after a period of installation troubles, we had broadband. Amazing. Meanwhile, my coding attention turned to the Internet and I started playing with HTML.
I had a part-time job through the second half of secondary school and through college, and I’ll never forget buying my first machine. I had saved up a lot of money from my job, spending only a little, and so at the start of the second year of college, September 2004, I spent £800 of my savings on my very on computer. A brand new set of components that I put together myself. It was amazing. I could play all the newest games, go on the Internet in my own bedroom, and use the computer whenever I wanted. Truly incredible.
Here we are in 2008 and she’s served me well, but I think the time has finally come for a new machine. I can’t wait. The same excitement grips me now that gripped me all those years ago when I got my first real PC. I hope I never stop getting so excited. I also hope I don’t lose my interest in coding! Since my days of BASIC through to HTML I’ve moved on: I regularly use C, Python and PHP, and I’ve held down a summer job coding in C#, Java and VB.
Computers might not be particularly random, but they really are my fascination.

Happy Birthday to me! At my mum’s, with a strawberry tart and my grandmother’s charm bracelet – a present from my mum. I was overcome.
